Issuance of permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the status of residence permitted under the visa status will begin.
If you apply online to change to "family stay" or extend the period of stay and apply for permission to engage in activities other than those permitted by your visa, and are given permission after receiving a notice of completion of the review, you will need to have a certification sticker (approximately 3cm square) affixed to your passport at the immigration office. You can exchange documents by mail with the immigration office using your residence card, but not your passport. So, if you just want to receive a new residence card, you can receive it by mail, but if you have permission to engage in activities other than those permitted by your visa, you will need to go to the immigration office.
However, it seems that this operation will be greatly improved from January 2024.
Instead of having a certification sticker affixed to your passport, you will be issued a "Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than Those Permitted Under the Status of Residence Permit," which will be sent to you by mail along with your new residence card.
In fact, we received a survey from the Immigration Bureau in November 2023, and we strongly requested improvements to the operation when simultaneously applying for permission to engage in activities other than those permitted by the status of residence. I never expected that they would improve it so quickly.
This survey is conducted approximately once a year, so we hope to continue to provide a variety of opinions in the future.
Another online application topic
I received a request for a simple renewal of my "Engineer/Humanities Knowledge/International Services" visa, and after gathering all the necessary documents, I began the online application process.
However, I ran into a problem where I entered my residence card number and it gave me an error. No matter how many times I checked it, it wasn't wrong, and no matter how many times I tried, it didn't work.
I wondered if maybe after I received the photo of my residence card, it was lost and had to be reissued.
So, when I called him and explained the situation, I found out that he was traveling overseas. He returned to Japan the next day, so I was able to complete the online application without any problems.
The user interface for the online application for residence status is not the best, but it seems like there are a lot of different mechanisms going on behind the scenes.
